We got into the Butterworth train station before sunrise and zombie walked out of the makeshift train station around 6:00. We walked through a sketchy looking, dark, empty lot and found the ferry terminal to the island of Penang. We watched the sunrise on the ferry over to Georgetown with a bunch of Malays on their way to work.
We took a taxi to the hostel we had booked and arrived around 7:00 am, well before check in. We dropped off our bags and found a street vendor selling char kway teow (delicious noodles) and Malaysian coffee.
Strong coffee with sweetened condensed milk. After breakfast, we wandered around the UNESCO world heritage old city of Georgetown.
At lunch time we tried and failed to find a restaurant someone from KL had recommended. We melted in the heat and stopped at a used bookstore. I picked up a couple of books since I broke the screen on my kindle a while back. Then it was time to relax and get out of the heat of the afternoon.
That night, we went to The Red Garden, a night market of amazing food vendors in one courtyard. They also had the cheapest beers I found in old town and some entertainment, so it was a great place to hang out for the evening.
We spent a few days exploring the old town in Penang, eating some amazing food, and meeting some interesting characters.
We went to Khoo Kongsi, a historic clan house in Penang one day.
We walked around one of the mosques in town and stumbled upon a series paintings on walls throughout Georgetown.
One morning we asked around and found all the street art in the Penang old town that were painted in water colors recently for a festival in Georgetown.
After walking around in the early morning, I found some pig part soup for breakfast near the Chew Jetty. I was unsure of what I ordered at first, but I have come to love a good pig part soup. Some lean meat, liver, intestines, other bits, noodles, stock and some chillies. Delicious.
We went out to dinner at the night market with a big group we met at the hostel. I ordered the fish head curry. Then the lady asked if I wanted it spicy and of course I said “yes” without thinking of the consequences.
It was delicious and painful at the same time.
It was a huge meal and Sarah had to roll me back to the hostel.
It was a great time in Penang and will definitely be back sometime. Penang was a very cool place with lots of history and amazing food. AMAZING FOOD!
